Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that nobody was above the law in the collective drive to ensure compliance with traffic rules and regulations in Nigeria.
Speaking after processing his driver’s license at the Federal Road Safety Corps, Abuja, Obasanjo said, “If I have to drive, I must have a valid driver’s license like others. That informed my visit. We should note that the driver’s license serves other purposes beyond driving of a vehicle and also useful outside the country such as certification of somebody’s identity”.
According to him, “anybody who wants to be law abiding must go through this process because you cannot be bigger than the law, no matter your political position or social status. You must pass through this process unless you are not ready to be law abiding”.

On the performance of the FRSC in the last 25 years, the former President commended the Corps’ Management and staff for impacting positively on Nigerian road users but stressed the need for the agency to redouble its efforts on road safety management. He also advised all Nigerian drivers to pass through the necessary certification process for acquiring the driver’s license in order to reduce the spate of road crashes in the country.
Reacting to Obasanjo’s assertions, the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka described his visit to process his driver’s license as a strong indicator that Nigeria has all it takes to be a law governed country where due process was a must for everybody, regardless of status or fame.
He added that the Corps will remain a performance-driven organization committed to sustained self evaluation in order to raise the bar of its activities to achieve set goals.
